Hair Transplant: Who & When?

A question haunting the minds of most hair loss patients is, ” Is this the right time for getting a hair transplant? or Should I wait some more?”

The problem is, there is no easy answer to that one. It is one of those questions that fall in the grey area. But before we discuss about timing, let us first discuss proper indications for hair transplant. You should plan a transplant if,

love-your-hairYou have Androgenetic alopecia stage III to stage VII.

Your hairline is not appropriate for age or you wish to achieve younger looking hair line

You have burn alopecia or traction alopecia.

You have eyebrow, eyelash or facial hair loss.

If you have one of these conditions and you are a good candidate for transplant,  the next question you should ask yourself is, ” How bothered am I with my hair loss?” If you have already reached the acceptance stage of your hair loss journey and would like to go bald by choice, you do not have to do anything. Do not let others bully you into a transplant, whatever be your age.

But if this hair loss affecting your work, your social life etc; you should consult a good hair restoration surgeon. An honest doctor can tell you about the available treatment options and can help you chalk a guided blueprint to tackle your hair loss.

Generally accepted guideline is that because men achieve their adult hairline in late twenties to early thirties so, hair transplant after this age is appropriate. But this criterion is only a recommendation not a core principle in hair transplant. This does not mean that every patient in his mid twenties should be denied a transplant, even if he is stage V or VI Norwood.

Sounds confusing?
Well, let’s clarify the matter. It is important to understand that age is not the only or absolute deciding criterion for timing a transplant. Present condition of hair loss, donor hair reserve, response to medication, ongoing miniaturisation, family history, physical fitness and psycho-social impact of hair loss on a person are also equally important.

Your hair transplant doctor would most likely recommend you to wait if,

You are in your teens with unstable hair line.

If you have rare genetic conditions like DUPA with donor area miniaturisation.

If you have a condition not amenable to hair transplantation like extensive alopecia areata.

If you are medically unfit for surgery (uncontrolled blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, heart failure etc)

Even in these conditions, it is best to consult a qualified plastic and cosmetic surgeon; because he can help you chalk out a plan for future and may offer you alternative therapies. An honest expert advice can save you lot of grief and money.
