Hair Transplant Frauds and Scams in India: Who’s Running it?

Their website is slick. It’s fast and comes at the very top of search results.

Their ad is great. And it’s everywhere. On internet and newspapers.

Their ‘Offers’ are incredible. Dirt cheap!!

A stylish and swanky clinic with 5 star facilities offering ‘hair transplant’ at throw away prices. Even the technique is same as that done by the best doctors of the world. What more could you want?

As you plan your incredibly cheap surgery convinced by the ‘details’ provided by the ever helpful ‘hair consultant’, you just can’t believe your luck.

You reach the ‘clinic’ on appointed day. There are multiple forms to be filled and further payment negotiations to be done.  You quickly swallow your meds as you are ushered into operating room. In  the rush of things, there’s just not enough time to ask who your surgeon is. After all if the ‘clinic’ is so good, they must have employed a good doctor.

Unfortunately, wrong. You may have been operated by a technician, a physician, a dentist or worse. Ideally, a hair transplant should be done by a plastic surgeon who receives training in both surgical art and aesthetics. Second option would be a skin doctor, who do not get surgical training, but are qualified to treat skin-hair-nail diseases. Unfortunately, quality surgeons do not fit in the scheme. The ploy is simple; attract gullible targets through marketing and play on peoples’ natural instinct to save money.

People are opting for these hair transplants as the promise of lower price is so attractive that they are ready to pay a little less money for botched up jobs. But why are these places difficult to spot?

Many of these ‘hair factories’ have sophisticated websites ranking high with Google paid ads, multiple location clinics for your convenience and smooth talking hair experts to attract the consumer.

“The marketing tactics are deceptive as it appears like a team of professional doctors with excellent testimonials.”

However, the reality is your surgery may be done by someone with no medical training.

So, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons is pleading with people to do their homework before booking any procedures at flashy clinics who keep their doctors hidden. It recommends that you must know the doctor who is going to carry out your surgery, his qualification and experience, because that is the single most important factor in getting a successful outcome of hair transplant surgery.
